Summer Time By Lauren Foley

Summer times nearly here

Hooray! It’s time for us to cheer

We can finally sit out in the sun

While eating fruity summer buns

We can now sit down by the sea

And watch all the happy bees

We can also play hide and seek

And climb up some mountain peaks

We’ve been waiting so long for some summer weather

And the heat that can be better

So lets enjoy it with our friends

Because the summer time is here again!

Global Warming

St Anne’s is making a change. Recently, tens of thousands of people have been trying to make a change in global warming and here in St. Anne’s, we are proud to say that we have been part of this change.

In February, 6th Class went to the cool planet experience in Wicklow. It is a place where you can learn about global warming and we are happy to say that we learned lots. We even got to make eco-friendly slime!

Also recently the student council in our school put on a performance of  ‘Save Our World’ which was a new take on the song ‘Hold My Girl’ by George Ezra. This was a song about the importance of saving our world. We had Mr. Dunne on guitar with Hannelie.

Here at St Anne’s we are trying really hard to save our world and we hope you are too!!

News from Sixth Class!

As we settle into our last term together in St. Anne’s – we can’t quite believe how quickly our time here has gone by.

In class at the moment we are reminiscing daily and looking forward to the big transition to secondary school. Many of us are going to different schools around the area and some of us are heading there on our own. It’s going to a big change but one we are preparing ourselves for in class through S.P.H.E lessons on topics such as relating to others, effective communication and myself and the wider world. We are excited and anxious in equal measure but we are definitely ready for the challenge and our next chapter.

Speaking of chapters – we are almost finished reading our latest class novel – ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ – what an amazing book it is. We love reading books that bring history to life through story and this is definitely an excellent example of how it should be done. Linking with this we are learning about WW2 in history, Europe in Geography, propaganda and our visual art will be pretty impressive too we hope, as we attempt silhouette art.

So as you can see we are still very busy on the academic side of things and alongside that we are working hard on our End of Year Show, which is on June 12th and 13th – we cannot wait but we’ve still got lots of work to do with our teachers Ms. Kett and Ms. Aivalikli before we’re stage ready.

The highlight of the last few weeks was of course our confirmation. The weather was amazing, the ceremony was beautiful and the day was memorable. Many of us shared the day with family and friends, some at home, some in hotels and restaurants but we all agree it was a truly wonderful day and occasion for us all.

Another highlight was of course getting our Class of 2019 hoodies – I’m sure you’ve spotted us around the school (we never take them off :0)

With active schools week coming up and testing continuing, we will keep working hard for the next few weeks and we look forward to our show, our end of year tour to Avon Rí and of course our graduation ceremony.

Bye for now!

The Adventure of Bob and Bill!

One horrible rainy Thursday, Bob the goldfish and his human friend Bill sat playing their version of poker. They each threw in a flake of fish food and looked at their card. The pair couldn’t find cards small enough for Bob so they made their own. Bob had an amazing hand (or fin, as they call it in fish poker). He had four fish Queens.

When the time came and they had to throw down cards, Bob gave a shout of delight. (This fish can talk, you see). “You owe me a trip to mars, my friend, as Bill picked the laminated pieces of paper out of the fish bowl. “Oh man,” said Bill as he searched for his wallet. He opened it, and out blew a ball of dust. He threw it on the couch, beside where he was sitting. He shoved his hands down his pockets, and found an unused, unscratched, scratch card he sighed. “Look, Bob, I might be able to get you a… new tub of fish food if I get a few quid from this card. Sorry, I knew you wanted to go to the World Fish Association of Fish, or WFAOF.” Bob sighed, as Bill scratched away the card to reveal the numbers. He had six numbers. A €4, a €200 , a €150, a €2k, another €2k and a €2. He only needed one more €2k, but he had a stinking €2. “I’m sor-” Bill began, but Bob shouted, “Wait..” “The end of the €2 isn’t scratched away!” Bill excitedly grabbed a coin and scratched. It was a €2k! They screamed and shouted so much, that their old neighbour, Mrs. Nonsence came to give out, but when she found out why they were making noise she joined in.

The next day, Bill booked the flights, and on Saturday the man and his fish went to the rocket station that so happened to exist and only be alive a minute walk away. Bob was in his portable space bowl. Bill was in a space suit. After hours of going through tests and training, they were ready to fly! They got onto the plane and looked around. It was amazing! They readied themselves, and soon it was take off. “3.. 2.. 1.. BLAST OFF!” The rocket blasted away from the station. They sprung away from earth and soon they were in space. A few days later, they landed. The door opened. They stepped out of the rocket. Then, they looked around. There was a sign saying “Welcome to Saturn!” Bob turned in his bowl, giving Bill devil eyes. “Saturn, Bill. SATURN???!” Bill blushed. “Umm… Sorry, lets go back to the rocket.” They turned and the rocket was starting to blast away. They jumped inside, as it began to blast. Phew! They changed the destination on auto pilot to Mars, not Saturn because Bill had pressed Saturn. A few days later they arrived in time for the World Fish Association of Fish meeting. On the last night of the meetings, there was a raffle, and Bob won. They weren’t told what the prize was, just to get on the rocket and relax. They did so, and a few days later the rocket stopped. They got out of the plane, and found a sign saying “Congrats, you’ve won a holiday for 2 months to stay in … Saturn!”

School Tours in Ms. Kett’s Sixth Class!

Another busy month in 6th class – we can’t actually believe how quickly time is flying by.

The highlight of the last few weeks has to have been watching the girl’s team battle courageously and determinedly in Croke Park and our school tour to Henrietta Street and The Hugh Lane gallery.

We are so proud of the girl’s team and we really respect them for getting out there, staying active, giving their all and representing us and St.Anne’s in such a positive way. Team sports are such a brilliant way of staying fit and healthy but also, committing to a team teaches us to work together, respect and support each other and handle life’s ups and downs and highs and lows in a way that we can’t be simply told about or taught in a classroom. It is invaluable experience that teaches us resilience and important life lessons.

Our tour to Henrietta Street was another day of learning and fun. We arrived at the building in the heart of Dublin city and immediately upon entering, were transported to another time and place. We had really interesting guides who explained to us the history of the building and gave us a good understanding of the lives of the families who lived and sometimes sadly died there. We learned about the different stages in it’s history, which reflected the history of Dublin through the years. It’s journey from a prosperous and flambouyant townhouse during the Georgian Era in Dublin to the slums and tenaments of Dublin’s darkest days, to an example of a family’s home during the 1930s until its last occupants left in the late 1970s. It was a facinating and nostalgic tour that opened our eyes to life in our city in the past. We would highly recommend it to everyone – young and old.

We had a fantastic last day before mid-term with dress up and cake eating fun and we are looking forward to the run in to christmas now 🙂

Mischief Managed in Ms. Kett’s Class!

We have gone Harry Potter mad in Ms. Kett’s 6th class and we’re currently starting the 2nd book in the  series. Although some of us have read them before, lots of us haven’t and we’re all thoroughly enjoying reading and disecting them. We are using the novel to inspire our art, teach us about story and character development and of course how to improve our own writing by using rich and descriptive language and a variety of adjectives and adverbs, a speciality of J.K. Rowlings.

As 6th class is our last year in primary school we began the year by writing a letter to our teacher with some requests and hopes for the year ahead. We are very excited about confirmation preparation and of course getting ready for the big move to secondary school. With this in mind we’ve been having lots of conversations around SPHE topics such as – friendships, looking after ourselves and making good choices. We’ve also been discussing healthy eating and good habits and began our studies of the human body by looking at the heart and lungs. The brain is next – we can’t wait. In history we are currently learning all about the Georgian Era and looking at architectural evidence round our great city. We are drawing and constructing Georgian building and doors and are becoming increasingly impressed by the magnificient buildings from the past. We are going on our first tour next week to Henrietta Street museum and the Hugh Lane Gallery. We are excited and looking forward to many more educational (and fun) tours throughout the year.

This month we also produced a ‘Passion Project’. We researched and prepared these at home and presented them to the class on completion. The variety and standard of the projects was excellent and it was facinating to learn about each others passions in such detail. We learned a lot from each other; some baked brownies and cookies (very popular indeed) and explained the process, others chose football as their passion (surprise, surprise), other projects included the World of Disney, Harry Potter, Horses, Hockey, Parties and even The Immune System, to name but a few. They were all fantastic and very informative. We are looking forward to doing many more projects throughout the year ahead.

We’ve also been keeping our eyes peeled for signs of Autumn and in particular the amazing changing colours in our environment. We’ve learned about photosynthesis and the Season   s at a global level. The wonderful autumnal colours have inspired more art.

Overall we’ve had a great start to the year and are looking forward to Halloween and the mid-term break now but also learning much more as the year unfolds. Slán.

Ms Aivalikli’s Sixth Class

September saw us focus on North America. We looked at American History through the ages and analysed how colonisation tactics changed from the Native American’s to the American Civil War. We also challenged ourselves by learning the names and location of each American State, we loved playing the states quiz!  Our STEM project centred on Native American’s as we created 3D totem poles in groups. Our designs went from individual, paired to finally group plans. We were delighted to see our plans come to life.
As we progressed from Native American History to the Civil Rights Movement our novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry has been very moving. We decided to base our September Assembly on the impact of civil rights activities. We sang ‘A Million Dreams’ to inspire others to believe in change.
In P.E we enjoyed joining in with Joe Wicks, aka ‘The Body Coach’ and his initiative to get schools moving. We especially enjoyed when he gave our class a ‘shout out’ live on his YouTube channel.
Lastly our Gaeilge topic in September was Mé Féin, we put together conversations and created short Scratch clips, in which we made our characters have a comhrá as Gaeilge!
In October we’re looking at Georgian Dublin, we are especially looking forward to our tour of 14 Henrietta Street! We will be sure to write about it soon!

An Interview with Ms. Aivalikli’s Class

On Tuesday March 13th four students from Clonkeen College, including two past pupils of St Anne’s visited Ms. Aivalikli’s class. The Clonkeen students are taking part in a competition called the ‘Consat’.

The day started with a presentation to explain how they made and launched a water rocket and a parachute. The parachute was made from a plastic polyester in the school colours black and amber. The rocket was made from a plastic bottle and a pump.

After the talk everyone went outside to see if the rocket could be launched. They all waited eagerly. There was a great excitement when the rocket took off.

What an exciting day for everyone!

Sixth Class Confirmation

On the 14th of April, the two 6th classes (Ms. Kett’s and Ms. Aivalikli’s) officially made their Confirmation.

A few weeks prior, they had the Service of Light, in which their parents handed their baptismal candle to them, passing on the light of guidance in the next step of Christianity.

Then they had rehearsals for the big day. They had confession and lots of preparation. Many people had prayers and readings to prepare.

On the day, they all wore robes/albs, which the teachers put pins on, saying their Confirmation names. That morning everyone was bubbling with excitement. The ceremony in St. Anne’s Church was beautiful. The 5th class sang many lovely songs too. Bernie and others from the parish did a great job helping them prepare for the occasion. St. Anne’s church was filled with artwork from the 6th classes.

The parents, teachers and children were beautifully dressed in shirts and dresses. We would like to thank our priests: Monsignor Enda Lloyd, Father Jamie and Father John. We would also like to thank our photographer John Coveney. At the end of the ceremony we got class photos. We all then went back to the school for a party. We all had great fun.

After the school party many of the children went to a hotel with friends and family for a meal.

We would like to thank our teachers and principal, all the people working with the church and our parents and friends for a lovely day, thank you very much.

Interesting Activities in Ms. Kett’s Class

So in Ms Kett’s class the class have been doing a project on the American States. The class have also have been writing short stories on Halloween in Irish, as a 4th class student I would imagine this to be very hard to do! On Mondays they have been doing cricket. In maths they have been doing trend graphs.
