An Interview with Ms. Aivalikli’s Class

On Tuesday March 13^th four students from Clonkeen College, including two past pupils of St Anne’s visited Ms. Aivalikli’s class. The Clonkeen students are taking part in a competition called the ‘Consat’.

The day started with a presentation to explain how they made and launched a water rocket and a parachute. The parachute was made from a plastic polyester in the school colours black and amber. The rocket was made from a plastic bottle and a pump.

After the talk everyone went outside to see if the rocket could be launched. They all waited eagerly. There was a great excitement when the rocket took off.

What an exciting day for everyone!

Sixth Class Confirmation

On the 14^th of April, the two 6^th classes (Ms. Kett’s and Ms. Aivalikli’s) officially made their Confirmation.

A few weeks prior, they had the Service of Light, in which their parents handed their baptismal candle to them, passing on the light of guidance in the next step of Christianity.

Then they had rehearsals for the big day. They had confession and lots of preparation. Many people had prayers and readings to prepare.

On the day, they all wore robes/albs, which the teachers put pins on, saying their Confirmation names. That morning everyone was bubbling with excitement. The ceremony in St. Anne’s Church was beautiful. The 5^th class sang many lovely songs too. Bernie and others from the parish did a great job helping them prepare for the occasion. St. Anne’s church was filled with artwork from the 6^th classes.

The parents, teachers and children were beautifully dressed in shirts and dresses. We would like to thank our priests: Monsignor Enda Lloyd, Father Jamie and Father John. We would also like to thank our photographer John Coveney. At the end of the ceremony we got class photos. We all then went back to the school for a party. We all had great fun.

After the school party many of the children went to a hotel with friends and family for a meal.

We would like to thank our teachers and principal, all the people working with the church and our parents and friends for a lovely day, thank you very much.

Aine’s Sensory Room

Our new Sensory Room, ‘Aine’s Sensory Room’, is a calm oasis away from the hustle and bustle of school life. When creating the space, we had a vision in mind of a space that provided comfort and calm that our children could use. The room has many wonderful elements including a bubble tube, infinity tunnel, trampoline, ball tent and a warm comfortable seating area. The room is painted in a soft tranquil blue colour and our projector radiates a lovely marine scene on the wall. Our children have had the opportunity to explore the room and they all agree it is a wonderful space. Some children have even said it’s their favourite room ever. It is fantastic to see the children of St Anne’s school enjoy the room and we are very lucky.

An Interview with Maria!

Hi my name is Pranav! Alex, Fionn and I from 4^th class did an interview with Maria.

Maria has worked as a secretary for 15 years in our school. She loves working with children. Some of her hobbies and interests are Tai Chi, music and reading. Her previous job interest was to be a nurse. Her favourite colour is green.

Maria said she loves all parts of her job, especially when she is busy. Maria does the after school with the junior and senior infants. This can be helpful for parents who have children finishing at 1:30 and 2:30. It is a time for total play she said. They do things like lego, football and all things fun. She said the best part of her job is working with all the interesting children, her friends and finishing at 3 o’clock. Maria said her job is always interesting because she gets to meet a lot of people. Maria’s plans for 2018 are to go on holidays, play a lot of golf and to win the lotto.

Throwback to Our Trip to the Irish Heritage Park!

Our class and the other 3^rd class went on a tour to the Irish Heritage Park, Wexford. We learned lots about the history of Ireland. We were brought back to the middle Stone Age, when the first people came to Ireland. Then we made our way up to the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, Early Christian Ireland and then the Vikings! We had learned lots about Early Christian Ireland and the Vikings in class.

On the tour we learned that they made homemade cement out of not very pleasant things and that the people hunted animals for food and wolves and bears for their skin. We saw houses from the middle Stone age, Iron age and the Viking era. All of these homes were quite similar in that the roofs were made of mud and straw and the walls of wattle and sticks. There were only one or two rooms inside where lots of people and the animals lived. The Viking houses had a hole in the roof for the smoke from the fire. There were fires lighting outside all of the houses and there was a strong smell from them. The people did not live very long lives in those days.

Our tour guide was called Corinne and she was dressed like a lady from Viking times. She showed us things like brooches, landmarks, ancient burial sites, a crannóg and much more. We also went on a longship but it didn’t go in the water for safety reasons. The tour was all outdoors. We went around different parts and there was a little house with a monk inside it! We had lots of fun and saw lots of things. I would go back again.

Wrapping Up for Christmas in Senior Infants!

Well what a busy month it has been in Senior Infants! From nativity plays to Aistear, Wildlife Warrior Workshops to Christmas sing-a-longs, December has been a cracker of a month!!

For much of November, Senior Infants had been practising for their production of ‘What a Star!’ and boy did they shine! On the 7th December 2017 all the Mums and Dads, Grannys and Grandads, brothers and sisters came to see our star-filled nativity show and everyone was very impressed. The children put on a fantastic performance!

In between practising for our play we made sun catcher nativity scenes, Christmas elves, Christmas tree decorations, penguin pictures and Christmas cards.

We had so much fun during Aistear this month, as our theme was Christmas all our stations were linked. We were busy elves in Santa’s Workshop designing, making and wrapping toys whilst the postmen and women delivered children’s letters to Santa; we baked chocolate chip cookies for Santa Claus and we made lovely Christmas cards.

We’ve had some special visitors in Senior Infants this month, Jingles – our Elf on the shelf (who we managed to catch on camera!! The footage can be seen on our Twitter page @MsOlsonsClass) and two lovely hedgehogs from Hedgehog Rescue Dublin. We learned a lot about hedgehogs and hibernation during our Wildlife Warrior Workshop. It was lots of fun!

To send us on our merry way, we finished off the term with a lovely sing-a-long, singing carols such as Jingle Bells, Away in a Manger, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town! That’s it from Senior Infants, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

November News from Ms. Hegarty’s Class

During November we started rehearsing our nativity play. It was a little surreal trying not to talk about Christmas or Santa (it was much too early!) while singing lots of Christmas songs and acting out the Nativity. We were very fortunate to have polydrons from the yard in our classroom in this month and we had great fun building with them.

A Busy Month in 5th Class!

This November in Ms. D’Arcy and Ms. Ní Mhurchú’s 5^th class we did quite a lot! “Mum’s the word” – but we’ve been reading a lot of Shakespeare lately. That’s just one of the phrases that the Bard introduced to everyday life. Other phrases you’re probably familiar with are: “Not slept one wink”, “Fashionable”, “A wild goose chase” and “All’s well that ends well”. Old Spike Milligan has been broadening our imaginations with his crazy poetry including “On the Ning Nang Nong”

Our minds have nearly exploded with all the knowledge we’ve learned about Pompeii and Rome! We’ve made our own volcanoes erupt and wrote stories about life as a gladiator. We thought long division would divide our heads altogether but it surprised us by being very simple.

We also learned how to sketch and draw our classmates with fantastic results. In Gaeilge we’ve been using the APOE system which is an easy way for children to create sentences as Gaeilge. We’ve also been working hard on our Briathra Neamhrialta!

We hope you’re on your best behaviour, because if not – who you gonna call? PEACE PROTECTORS! A group of us in fifth class have been given the responsibility to help out on yard and we have cool high viz jackets so we can be easily seen.

We all felt like winners when Sam Maguire came to visit. We even got to touch him (never washing our hands again!). What a busy month it was! – and December is set to be even busier. ..

Super Swimmers in 4th Class!

We interviewed Mr. Allen’s 4^th class. It was their first time doing the class swimming lessons in Loughlinstown Leisure Centre. The class did it for forty minutes every Wednesday for eight weeks. Once at swimming, the swimming coaches put the children into small groups.

Group 1 were the strong, high-level swimmers. They learnt to do all 4 strokes. The strokes they learnt were freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Group 2 did 3 strokes – freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Group 3 learnt to do the front crawl. Group 4 were the beginners. During the 8 weeks, they learnt to swim. Well done!

I interviewed a boy in Mr Allen’s class. He didn’t do the first few weeks of swimming as he was nervous but after getting encouragement from his class-mates, teachers and coaches he gave it a go. He is so pleased he tried to swim.

Thank you for reading our interview about Mr Allen’s 4^th class swimming lessons. Finally, Mr. Allen is so kind – he gave each child 50c for the lockers!
