Third Class’ Trip to Dublin Zoo!
On Tuesday the 30th of April Ms.Travers’ and Mr Dunne’s 3rd class went to Dublin Zoo. We headed off on a bus. We all had partners. Everyone played card games, read, talked, drew, sang or made up handshakes. Luckily nobody threw up! We finally reached Dublin Zoo and everyone was so excited. When we got out of the bus it smelled so wonderful. We could smell fresh air.We walked along, it was so lovely to walk in the forest. We went to meet our tour guide. She was very nice. We were very hungry when we got out of the bus so we had lunch. It was so lovely and we went to see the animals. We walked along to see a hilly piece of land, it was full of animals. We saw ostriches, they were playfully walking around. There were two boys; I know this because they were black. We learned that the boys are black and the girls are grey. We saw giraffes and they were very tall. The mother giraffe was looking after her babies.
We also saw zebras. The zebras had a lot of stripes and they were so cool. We saw rhinos and they were very big. We saw many more animals like monkeys, they were not shy at all, they were looking up at the glass and jumping from branch to branch. We also saw elephants, they were pushing themselves down hills in muck, they were so cute. We saw a lot of other animals like tigers, lions, wolves, chimpanzees, primates, gorillas, penguins and snow leopards. It was a great day, everyone laughed and were fascinated by the animals. Before we left we went to the playground and saw the reptiles. There are so many animals in the zoo. I have an interesting fact for you. Did you know there are 550 animals in the zoo?
When we went back on the bus, the lion didn’t want us to leave because he let out a huge roar. Some of us were scared and some of us were happy and just laughed. We left on the bus and a lot of people were singing Queen. It was a great day; both of the 3rd classes enjoyed it!

Time Well Spent in Mr. Dunne’s Third Class!
Mr. Dunne’s third class kicked off the New Year with a bang! We’ve been doing loads of really interesting things in class so far this year. Here’s a few examples!
We’ve been learning about time and how to tell the time. We decided to make our own clocks using paper plates and a lot of hard work! They work really well, and we’re finding them really helpful in class. Not to mention, we got to add our own designs to them to personalise them. You can tell we spent a lot of time on them… but, after all, hard work takes time!
We’ve also been learning about the food pyramid and the five food groups – carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, dairy, protein and fats. We’ve been looking at what’s in our lunches and what we’re eating at home. We created menus that contained all of the five food groups! We also looked at the amount of sugar in different kinds of drinks. You can see in the picture below the amount of sugar in flavoured water, Sprite, a smoothie (although this is the good, natural kind of sugar!), a Monster energy drink and a bottle of Coke. We were all really surprised at some of them!!

News from Mr. Dunne’s Third Class!
We have been so busy since the last time you heard from us! Last week, we went to the National Heritage Centre in County Wexford. Down there we got a really interesting tour through different settlements throughout Irish history, including Viking settlements which we have been learning about. We got to see how these people used to live, and even how they used to cook! We got to eat meat cooked from a fulacht fiadh – and see how the meat was cooked also. The fulacht fiadh works by placing roasting hot rocks into a bath of water built into the ground. It was a great trip enjoyed by all!

News from Ms Travers’ Third Class
In third class we are very happy because our favourite subject is P.E. P.E is on Tuesday and Thursdays. On Tuesday, we do P.E with Jay the gymnastic coach. We really love this because we get to do dodge ball and lots of new moves in Gymnastics. On Thursdays, P.E. is with Ms Travers and we do basketball. We are also learning some Irish dancing.
We did Family Tree projects last month. This was very interesting because we learned that some pupils ancestors took part in World War 1 and World War 2! Some pupils ancestors worked in the zoo and some worked in factories.
Pupils have ancestors from all over Ireland including Cork , Donegal, Louth , Kerry , Galway , Meath, Laois, Wicklow and of course Dublin. Some pupils ancestors are from India, Poland, Nigeria, London, France, Ukraine, Greece, Canada , Scotland and Wales. So we are all truly international!
We got two new pupils in our class this term Atif and Kaia and we are glad they joined us .

News from Mr. Dunne’s Third Class!
It’s been an absolutely wonderful start to the year in Room 13, with plenty of interesting and exciting things just one month in. Recently, we’ve been doing plenty of discussion on the changing autumnal weather. We went out on a nature walk to have a search for as many beautiful colours we could find, and took some souvenirs back in with us! We then did some observational drawings which can be seen decorating the hallway just outside our room.
We also worked on creating self-portraits and the results are just amazing! There are some very talented artists up here in Room 13…
We’ve been doing the daily mile each day (depending on the weather!), and we recently carried out an investigation into how exercise affects our pulse rate. In other science-y news, we created some old-fashioned cup telephones to investigate how sound travels! We had great fun doing this, and we were all surprised at how well the sound travels through the string. Amazing!
That’s not all, each week we have been debating RTÉ News2Day’s question of the week. Each week, the children’s news show poses a ‘Question of the Week’ and we have a whole-class discussion and debate, write our opinions and send them in! So far, two of the children in our class (Isabelle Forde and Alan Morley) have actually had their answers read out on the news.

3…2…1…Blast Off in Third Class!
In school, we did a balloon rocket experiment. It was great fun. We watched a video of it on the Whiteboard and then we got started. If you ever want to try this at home, here is what you will need:
- a balloon
- tape
- straw
- string
- something to hold it up with (we used a chair and a door handle.)
What to do:
- Thread the string through the straw;
- Blow up a balloon but don’t tie it;
- Tape the straw (with string running through it) to the balloon;
- Let the balloon go and it will shoot down the string.
- Then, watch the magic!
I would definitely recommend this as I had a lot of fun and so did my class.

Throwback to Our Trip to the Irish Heritage Park!
Our class and the other 3rd class went on a tour to the Irish Heritage Park, Wexford. We learned lots about the history of Ireland. We were brought back to the middle Stone Age, when the first people came to Ireland. Then we made our way up to the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, Early Christian Ireland and then the Vikings! We had learned lots about Early Christian Ireland and the Vikings in class.
On the tour we learned that they made homemade cement out of not very pleasant things and that the people hunted animals for food and wolves and bears for their skin. We saw houses from the middle Stone age, Iron age and the Viking era. All of these homes were quite similar in that the roofs were made of mud and straw and the walls of wattle and sticks. There were only one or two rooms inside where lots of people and the animals lived. The Viking houses had a hole in the roof for the smoke from the fire. There were fires lighting outside all of the houses and there was a strong smell from them. The people did not live very long lives in those days.
Our tour guide was called Corinne and she was dressed like a lady from Viking times. She showed us things like brooches, landmarks, ancient burial sites, a crannóg and much more. We also went on a longship but it didn’t go in the water for safety reasons. The tour was all outdoors. We went around different parts and there was a little house with a monk inside it! We had lots of fun and saw lots of things. I would go back again.

Music and News in Third Class!
Mr Dunne’s class have learned a song called “Somewhere Only We know” by Keane and played it at assembly. There is also a video on Facebook of them singing it which got the most likes of the year for the school. Every week the class watches RTE News2Day and answers the questions of the week. The class then sends in their answers. Mia Byrne and Ella were featured on the show. For art this Halloween the class did Halloween Silhouettes.

Debating in Third Class!
Hi my name is Teagan.
Mr Dunne’s class have been doing a lot of fun stuff that I will be telling you about. So let’s get started!
First they did some Art. Every day they watch the news. In fact, they have been doing some debates and did you know that the people on the news ask questions? Well they sent in their answers hoping that they would be read.
They have been doing their family projects and they went on a nature walk. They have been reading David Walkers book called Rat Burgan. They did a bit of pulse exercise and they found that cool!
